"North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 54-53 to win the 1957 NCAA College Basketball Championship. Kansas' Wilt Chamberlain was named the series' Most Outstanding Player (MOP).
The national final was held at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri in front of some 7,778 fans.
The Tar Heels starters, Lennie Rosenbluth scored 20 points, Tommy Kearns and Pete Brennan scored 11 points each, and Joe Quigg scored 10 points. Whereas from the reserves, Bob Young scored 2 points. This brought the Heels to a total of 54.
Whereas the Kansas starters Wilt Chamberlain scored 23 points, Maurice King and Gene Elstun scored 11 points each, John Parker 4 points, and Ron Loneski 2 points. Their reserve, Lew Johnson recorded 2 points. This brought Kansas to a total of 53 points.
Tar Heels' Lennie Rosenbluth was named the Helms Foundation College Basketball Player of the Year. Whereas the Tar Heels coach, Frank McGuire, was named UPI College Basketball Coach of the Year.
